Sulawesi's butterfly fauna includes large and iconic species such as Papilio blumei, Graphium androcles and delicate Idea blanchardii, as well as boasting an unusually high number of Danaid species. With this comes an endless mimicry race with so many butterflies trying to look like poisonous Danaids, from the Papilio and Graphium species to myriad Satyrids. Sulawesi is the first landmass east of the Wallace’s Line, and even if you know the butterflies from other parts of south-east Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia and even neighbouring Borneo, you will be amazed by how different Sulawesi’s butterfly fauna is. Also, over half of its known butterfly species (about 560) are endemic. If you count the Wallacea endemics, that number goes much higher. This means when you see a butterfly here, the chances it is are new for you!
